Semana Santa en Marbella

Los rituales son canales adecuados para el establecimiento de relaciones tan complejas de analizar pero tan obvias de apreciar como las relativas a las existentes entre los ciudadanos, los fieles, y Dios y, simultáneamente, entre esos mismos ciudadanos y sus vecinos y, en última instancia, entre tales ciudadanos y los visitantes foráneos.

Son muchos los municipios malagueños, especialmente la capital, que de las procesiones de Semana Santa han hecho una verdadera fiesta, su gran fiesta anual en sentido antropológico. Una fiesta rigurosamente ritualizada en cuanto a los papeles que juegan imágenes titulares, integrantes de los cortejos y espectadores, con unos escenarios urbanos predeterminados y con una escenografía depurada a lo largo de siglos. Todo un ritual, esperado por la mayoría de la población y preparado durante todo el año por los cofrades, que tiende a alcanzar en unos momentos y lugares concretos lo que sin ambages puede denominarse la catarsis colectiva en su doble significado de purificación que produce la contemplación de la tragedia en el espectador y de sentimiento de éxtasis de masas.

Tan intensa es la idea de fiesta popular aplicada a la Semana Mayor entre los malagueños, que el concepto de tiempo litúrgico que corresponde a las palabras "Semana Santa" ha dejado paso al significado de procesiones. Y la fuerza de esta idea generalizada se basa no sólo en el aspecto festivo y al tiempo dramático de tales cortejos, sino muy principalmente en que se trata de una fiesta popular que encuentra escenarios en todos los barrios históricos, que es gratuita y que es plural, interclasista y abierta.

Cada barrio histórico posee una o varias cofradías a través de las cuales se articula buena parte de la vida social de la vecindad y mediante cuya procesión se reafirman las connotaciones singulares de dicho barrio. Así, junto a la motivación devocional y religiosa, que es la principal y explícita, coexisten otras motivaciones ímplicitas que impulsan a los ciudadanos a ingresar en las cofradías. Son razones como la tradición familiar, la necesidad de relacionarse socialmente o el ansia instintiva de toda persona de pertenecer y sentirse incardinado en un concreto grupo.

Este deseo de pertenencia a las cofradías, tan libre y voluntario como intuitivo, es sin duda el factor que ha impulsado el extraordinario y dilatado desarrollo de tales asociaciones en una ciudad de tan escasa vertebración social como Málaga. No en vano, las casi 40 hermandades existentes en la capital malagueña aglutinan en la actualidad a más de 75.000 cofrades y son, con muchísima diferencia sobre asociaciones de vecinos, clubes deportivos, partidos políticos o peñas recreativas, las entidades con mayor número de miembros.

La Semana Santa malagueña, mediante sus cofradías y sus procesiones, es así el cauce idóneo del ritual colectivo, el símbolo de la fe religiosa y la identidad grupal de la ciudad, y, al unísono, el eje sobre el que gira una parte importante de la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes, para muchos de los cuales el año se divide en antes y después de la Semana Santa.

SEMANA SANTA EN MARBELLA

En el contexto cosmopolita de esta ciudad perviven nueve cofradías (incluidas las de Nueva Andalucía y San Pedro Alcántara), integradas en la Agrupación de Cofradías de Semana Santa.

El Domingo de Ramos se inicia con la procesión de Nuestro Padre Jesús a su entrada en Jerusalén y Nuestra Señora de la Paz. Destaca su paso por las murallas del antiguo castillo y la salida y entrada a su Capilla en el Hospital de San Juan de Dios.

El Lunes Santo se inicia con el desfile de Nuestro Padre Jesús Atado a la Columna y María Santísima de la Amargura. Salida y encierro en la Plaza del Santo Cristo y su paso por las calles Lobatas y Afuar son los momentos más destacados.

El Martes Santo, sale de la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación la Titular de los "hoteleros", Santa Marta. En el trono aparecen Jesús coronado y con caña, acompañado de Marta y María . Destaca su paso por la calle Virgen de los Dolores.

El Miércoles Santo procesiona la Hermandad de Jesús Nazareno desde la parroquia de la Encarnación. En el primer trono aparece Jesús Nazareno con la cruz a cuestas seguido de la Virgen del Mayor Dolor. Esta corporación también procesiona a otro Sagrado Titular la noche del Viernes Santo: el Cristo Yacente sobre catafalco dorado.

La Cofradía de María Santísima del Calvario, sale en procesión desde la parroquia de su misma advocación el Jueves Santo. Destaca la bajada del trono con palio desde su ermita. Recientemente ha incorporado el Misterio de la Exaltación.

Desde la ermita de Santiago, sale la Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo del Amor.Este lo hace en un trono aparte portando en su diestra una pluma y en la izquierda un libro. Un momento muy especial es la liberación de un preso del Arresto Municipal. Igualmente emotiva resulta la salida desde su pequeña ermita en la Plaza de los Naranjos. Cierra los desfiles la Hermandad decana de la Semana Santa de Marbella, la de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. Procesiona a una imagen con manos entrelazadas, mirada baja y en el pecho un corazón atravesado por una daga.

Capítulo aparte lo constituye la Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo del Perdón y Nuestra Señora del Dolor y la Esperanza de la barriada de Nueva Andalucía. Sale en procesión el Jueves y Viernes Santo, si bien el Domingo de Ramos representan en vivo la Entrada en Jerusalén. Destaca la salida de los tronos por el estrecho arco de la iglesia.

Visiting Puerto Banus

Puerto Banus is located just west of Marbella and is totally different as it is a young a brash resort and is the place to be pampered yachtside and ogle those fabulous luxury yachts while sipping a drink at one of the many open air restaurants and bars. The setting is close to ideal, with its impressive mountain backdrop and ocean views.

Since its beginning back in the 1970’s, the port has steadily grown and now features a casino, commercial shopping centre and a Corte Ingles department store.
If your looking for nightlife then Puerto Banus with its wide choice of alfresco bars, piano clubs and discos is the place to visit. However, during the day this is a window shopper´s dream with several of the worlds renowned fashions houses featured here, in addition to small, interesting shops and boutiques.

Puerto Banus is named after José Banús who was a real estate developer working in Andalucia and the Marina is one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean coast. There are 915 tying-in points on the two piers, Ribera and Benabolá. In the clear blue waters the most luxurious yachts in the world have anchored and slept: the Nabila of the magnate Adnan Kashoggi, the Príncipe Abdulazis, the Tritona, and the Shaf. The port has been declared a Center of International Tourist Interest and among its many honours has the Gold Medal for Merit in Tourism.
Real-estate developer José Banús took three years to build this famous marina and it was fomally opened in 1970 by Prince Rainier of Monaco and his wife, Grace Kelly. It cost 915 million ptas (€5,499,261)
Shopping, having a coffee on one of the terraces, walking along the piers, and, of course, enjoying the nighttime atmosphere by dancing until dawn or drinking a cocktail while gazing at the star-covered bay are just some of the activities you have to choose from. And every year more visitors come, making it a must-see in the summer months for celebrities and people from the tabloid world, including photographers who snap their celebrity shots.

The Old Town and Orange Square in Marbella

Partially surrounded by the ruins of an old Arab wall with narrow white washed streets, old churches and squares, as well as lots of fascinating shops and boutiques At the heart of old town is Orange Square which dates back to 1485 and, according to Christian urban design, is surrounded by whitewashed houses and three historical buildings - the town hall, the old governor's house and the Chapel (Hermitage) of Santiago. The gardens are full of brightly coloured flowers and orange trees and in the centre stands a bust of King Juan Carlos 1.

At the end of Nueva Street, where it joins Orange Square, stands a stone fountain which dates from the year 1504 when it was erected by the first Mayor of Christian Marbella. To the left is the Old Governor's House which dates back to 1552 and still retains the original stone facade adorned with shields and a three arched balcony.

The Town Hall located on the square was built in 1568. On the front right-hand corner of the building is a sun dial, various shields and some commemorative stone inscriptions perfectly conserved and in legible condition. One of them dates back from the 11th June, 1485 when the town was re-conquered from the Moors. Within the Town Hall are the original Council Chambers which are now divided into two floors. The upper floor has an artistic ceiling carved in Mudejar style and the walls are covered with curious murals that date from 1572. These represent the eagle from the Imperial Standard belong to the Catholic King and Queen, a scene from Christ's crucifixion, Marbella's first coat of arms and some allegories of the power of God and the administration of justice. The Catholic King and Queen's pendant, an important historical relic, is also held in this hall and publicly displayed every June 11th to commemorate the date of the re-conquest of the town.

Dominating the square is the most important building in the town, The Church of Saint Mary whose construction began in 1618. The main facade of the building is adorned with a beautiful red stone entrance worked in Baroque style while the interior consists of three sections which underwent restoration after the 1936 Civil War. The church organ here is the most important built in Spain in the last 125 years. The installation began in 1972 and was completed in 1975. It is made up of 5000 pewter, copper and wooden pipes, four manual keyboards of 56 notes, a 36 note pedal and various other special characteristics. In the church square there is also a tower which was part of the wall that used to surround the Moorish town.

Walking from there to Trinidad Street past a row of houses are more ruins of the castle and remains of some Roman Capitals that were taken from other constructions and used for building its walls. The existing wall extends to the end of Portada street where it disappears, as did so many others when, in 1786, by royal command of King Carlos 111, town and city walls were pulled down. Nearby, the Chapel of Santiago, built in the 15th century was the first Christian church in the town. Today it houses religious figures belonging to the Brotherhood of Love and Charity, including a wooden carving of Christ in Neo Baroque style.

Located in one of the major streets of the old town is the Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz Square and Chapel which dates back to the 15th century. The main facade is a combination of simple stone work construction and traditional whitewash.
